Recently, we caught up with TJ Lint, a laborer with McAninch who has been on the job since June 1.
Lint’s path to McAninch came in what many might consider an untraditional way. A former football player, Lint was a four-year letter winner playing wide receiver at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake. He’s originally from Rippey, Iowa, where he attended Greene County High School. When Lint first started playing football as a kid, it was just a way to roughhouse. As he grew older, football became a bigger part of his life.
He’s near the top of the record holders at Buena Vista, ranking No. 2 in total catches and total yards and tied for fourth in touchdowns. Modest in nature, he doesn’t readily share that information; it took some online research to tell more of his story.
Lint graduated with a bachelor’s degree in marketing and business, but it’s the lessons he learned on the field that he’s applying right now with his job at McAninch. He was attracted to the outdoor work and team environment of the company, which led him to begin his career here. He’s hoping that by working hard, he’ll have opportunities to move up the ranks over time.
“Working at McAninch is similar to being a team member in football. You have to know your role, work hard and do things that aren’t necessarily asked of you,” Lint says.
He’s on punch list crew, which means his team checks projects to make sure everything has been done, is up to code and ready for inspection. If things need more work to be considered complete, the crew makes sure it’s done.
From Day 1, he was learning right on the job, doing walk-throughs with other crew members and performing hands-on tasks.
“The people are my favorite part of this job,” Lint says. “I didn’t need to know how to do certain things when I started, the supervisors are very helpful and provide coaching to the crew as needed.”
Most days, he’s on the job at 6 a.m. and wraps up by 6 or 7 p.m. Saturdays are a shorter day as his crew typically works until noon. Sundays are a day to recuperate.
Lint doesn’t mind the long hours, because in this job you’re often at the mercy of the weather. You work as much as you can, when you can.
If you or someone you know is looking for a career with a company who is passionate about its people, puts safety first and provides professional growth opportunities in a team-oriented and highly productive culture, look to McAninch.
