Andy Purdun is in his sixth season working for McAninch as an equipment operator. Before coming to work for the company – which was named as one of Iowa’s Top Workplaces in Iowa by the Des Moines Register last year – he spent 21 years working in the same capacity for other companies.
When we caught up with Purdun, he was creating a pad that a substation would sit on at the Apple Data Center. With the billion-dollar-plus site scheduled to come online in 2020, this Waukee site plans to be run entirely on green energy. The project gained headlines in 2017 when Apple Inc. CEO Tim Cook visited Des Moines and joined Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds to unveil plans for its planned $1.375 billion data center in Waukee. In a news release, Apple said the 400,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art data center is being built to better serve North American users of iMessage, Siri, the App Store and other Apple services.
While it’s a high-profile and noteworthy project for McAninch to be involved in, it’s not those types of headlines that drew Purdun to the company.
“Besides the fact that I get to work with ‘big boy toys’ all day, it’s the people who make this job special,” he says. “There are a lot of really good people working for McAninch.”
In the off-season, Purdun enjoys deer and coyote hunting. The longer hours during the summer months make way for time off during the winter and allow employees to pursue hobbies during that time.
“I enjoy having the winters off and being able to take vacations to warmer places,” he adds.
He has practical advice to new employees who may be just starting with the company or are considering applying to work for McAninch.
“Show up every day and learn as much as you can about the piece of equipment you’re operating,” Purdun says. “If you get a chance to move to a different piece of equipment, do it. The more types of equipment you can run, the more valuable you are to the company.”
